What Reddit finds funny

There are many fractured communities on the internet.  One such is the great boogeyman known as Reddit.  Hiding behind that friendly smiling alien are clusters of scientists and villainy that would make Nancy Reagan blush.  It’s also become the go-to place for a lot of folks to check out webcomics.

So what makes people laugh on Reddit?  Given its generally ephemeral nature, the comics most likely to succeed are gag strips that don’t require much of a commitment beyond the ten seconds it takes to make you laugh.  Sorry, Girl Genius!  You’re just going to have to cry yourself to sleep with all those googly-eyed Hugo Awards.

What else? Well, we don’t have to speculate.  Let’s take a tour of the Best of Reddit!

The “hottest” webcomic coming out of Reddit is this piece from College Humor… and frankly, given the reputation of both College Humor and Reddit, this comes off as really tame.  They’re talking about food, the guy is being passive aggressive, no one has a nose… for serious, this could easily pass as a Cathy strip.  Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate!  AAAACCCKKK! And yet… it’s got a staggering 1,826 upvotes.

The second comes from Derek Achoy’s stick figure comic Smiling Ribs.  First off, I didn’t realize people were still into this style.  I guess the lesson here is the more primitive a comic looks, the more successful it will be.  Eat it, Lackadaisy Cats! Secondly, this totally upends what I thought the typical Reddit reader looked like.  I thought Reddit was primarily Millenials.  But that fact that this got 1,103 upvotes made me realize that Reddit readers are all eligible for AARP.  It… actually explains a lot of things.

Finally, we get something closer to what I expect from Reddit with Robospunk.  The site is apparently on a Tumblr platform… and maybe it’s just me but Tumblr and Reddit sounds like an unholy marriage.  Anyway, the punchline is something callled Eternally Bleeding Skeleton, which is very webcomics.  Put that jazz on a t-shirt, yo.

About El Santo

Somehow ended up reading and reviewing almost 300 different webcomics. Life is funny, huh? Despite owning two masks, is not actually a luchador.

  1. “But that fact that this got 1,103 upvotes made me realize that Reddit readers are all eligible for AARP.”

I think a lot of redditors are, like, 26 but think they’re getting old because they just had their first hangover.

  2. Yeesh, these are pretty weak. I’ll stick with Kate Beaton, Tracy Butler, and Dr. McNinja, thank you very much!

  3. There’s actually several webcomic communities on reddit. It’s just that most of the ones on reddit haven’t progressed from 2001 era gag-a-days like Cyanide and Happiness or Olgaf.

    • Can you recommend any communities for me? I actually was going to do a follow up post once I found out /r/comics was basically webcomics.

      • The several were essentially /r/webcomics and /r/comics, with a dash of specific fandom subreddits and vagueries like /r/homestuck and /r/respectthreads.

Truth is, you (along with webcomic ratings sites and webcomic hosts) were the best reccomender/community for a while.

Outside of that, I guess Sufficient Velocity is alright, with threads on KSBD and other webcomics, and also 4chan’s /co/ subboard, which has webcomic artists talk and boost each other. It also showed me Alien Hand Syndrome which is pretty good.

        • I am humbled to hear that. Thank you.

          • He’s not wrong. There’s basically no infrastructure to get webcomic recommendations. The large aggregate sites don’t really tell you anything about the comics in question, and generally have the sort of layout that invokes 90’s web design.

A place like Reddit focuses, as you pointed out, on gag comics. That’s what “webcomics” means for most people, just like when people say “comics” they mean “comics of one genre by the two largest publishers”. Gag comics are nice, but I don’t need endless recommendations about one being slightly funnier than the other.

So for anything else, it’s either you or 4chan. Because you and 4chan are the only places I know where there’s decent, accessible review of long form webcomics. The only other way to get some information about webcomics, is to go to those aggregate sites and look at the promotional ads creators make for their own comics.

It’s weird, but despite there being so many damn webcomics, there’s no real, central place where people talk about them.
