eBay’s Loss leader

Hey, do you have some disposable income to throw at a piece of Internet history? Namely, a piece of webcomic history? Well, eBay has a treat for you!

That’s right, seller “absath_the_artist” is auctioning off the original panel of… well, here’s the product description:

This is the original sketch for the infamous comic “Loss”. Now you can own the original art from the comic that spawned a thousand parodies! Pencil sketch on 8.5×11 paper. Auction includes a signed copy of the finished comic- the only copy of this comic that I will ever sign 🙂

Hurry now! There’s only two days left to bid, and as of this writing the value’s up to $122! And, well, if that’s out of your price range, absath also has a lovely Napoleon Dynamite action figure that’s a steal at $10.

About El Santo

Somehow ended up reading and reviewing almost 300 different webcomics. Life is funny, huh? Despite owning two masks, is not actually a luchador.

  1. So wait, if “absath_the_artist” is Tim Buckley himself… and he’s calling this “the comic that spawned a thousand parodies”… well, at least that would mean he can laugh at himself! See, this is why I don’t think CAD’s detractors ever really got what Buckley was trying to do with the comic…

    • I’m reasonably sure it is. Look at all of other “absath”‘s offerings and there’s plenty of signed CAD strips up for sale. (“Loss” is the high ticket item, though.) And yeah, I’m pretty sure Tim gained perspective on “Loss” some time ago, and it may be why he decided to switch to the Players as the main characters … to ditch the baggage and get back to comedy.

Which is why I got no problem shilling his eBay sale here. The guy knows that “Loss” may have flopped dramatically, but it DID turn into a long-standing internet meme, and he’s OK with that. And if he wants to make money off of its notoriety, it’s fine by me. 🙂

      • Yeah, I can’t really blame Buckley for trying to make a bit of money from his internet infamy. Lemons into lemonade, and all that.

As for the “rebooted” CAD, I checked up on it recently, and it’s the blandest bunch of bland that ever blanded. Ditching the drama was a smart move, but Buckley still can’t tell a decent joke to save his life.

      • Actually, I suspect he already had a plan to wrap up the comic when the miscarriage happened. You can see hints of this in his news post at the time, for example when he foreshadows what Scott was doing in his secret room, a theme and character that hadn’t come up in ages.

  2. So… considering the ease with which Buckley’s style can be imitated (which is why he picked it), how do we know any of this is authentic?

  3. The bidding’s closed, and the value of “Loss” is $307. That’s pretty decent scratch, honestly.

    • It’s not bad for a single comic, I guess, but it’s not exactly anything to write home about, either. Especially when compared to the five- and six-figure sums comics like Digger, Cucumber Quest, Ava’s Demon, and Girl Genius are pulling down on Kickstarter.

      • Though, like someone mentioned when the we had a Kickstarter discussion here, all that money goes to operating costs of publishing and distributing the books. For all I know, they could be operating at a negative profit.

        That $307? All profit.
