The Gutt- … er … Harvey Awards 2011

That other comic award, The Harveys, just published their nominees. (Thanks to everyone who sent me an email about it.) Here are your nominees for Best Online Comics Work:

Clearly I am rooting for Hark! A Vagrant, which I have enjoyed since this site’s early days.

In other categories, Ed Ryzowski was nominated for Best Colorist and Best Artist, both for GUTTERS; THE GUTTERS was nominated for Best New Series; Ryan Sohmer picked up a nom for Special Award for Humor in Comics (THE GUTTERS again!), as well as …

this can’t be right…

Best Writer!?!?!?!??!

What?!?!?

Those creators who “write, draw, ink, letter, color, design, edit or are otherwise involved in a creative capacity in the comics field” are clearly seeing something I’m not seeing.

Other non-GUTTERS nominees with ties to webcomics include Shannon Wheeler (also up for the Humor in Comics award) and Roger Langridge (THOR: THE MIGHTY AVENGER, THE MUPPET SHOW, and Act-I-Vate webcomic MUGWHUMP THE GREAT).

  1. Gutters? Who nominates these things? I guess if you gotta choose one from the only three webcomics you know then it makes sense. No. This is not acceptable. Is it safe to assume that this is like the majority of video game reviews out there where the most stars goes to the ones with the most cash? Can we just pretend these people don’t exist?

  2. I think Scott Kurtz mentioned once that it’s actually really easy to get nominated in the Harvey if you have a studio, because everyone working in it is a professional in the comics business, and can nominate whatever their bosses tell them.

  3. It’s probably because Gutters has been advertising like crazy on The Comics Journal. Maybe a lot of the nominators don’t read a lot of webcomics but they do read TCJ and found Gutters through the ads there. That’s no excuse for not being able to tell the difference between good art and bad art though.

I nominate Sohmer for the “forty lashes with a wet noodle” award, preferably administered by Alison Bechdel.

  4. I can see how it was nominated. Sohmer has a lot of connections in the industry, and these connections would want to vote for a fellow they know.

Now, how he got those connections in the first place is a complete and utter mystery to me. He’s…not good at his job. At all. Also, misogyny.

    • This is also a mystery to me. It was really weird to see Danielle Corsetto with Sohmer in Calgary. Like, does she know that the webcomic he makes is the exact opposite of everything she stands for?

Maybe people quietly ignore that part of him because he’s good at something that we, as the internet audience, simply fail to see.

      • I think irl he’s a really nice person or something. It’s baffling because it doesn’t translate to his strip at all.

  5. I want to say it’s just some dumb award and it doesn’t really matter, but the sad truth those with official awards are much more likely to be solicited for guest speaking appearances and be special guests at conventions. If we could only make a “5” rating from the Webcomic Overlook so prestigious.

  6. I know that Sohmer pride himself as a “professional webcomic” but he seriously must try remember that his work is a webcomic. Also he should stop pretending that he is at the same level with mainstream comics or that he is best of the best on the internet.

  7. Gutters is just Penny Arcade for spandex nerds. Of course they’d want to give the guy an award.

  8. I’m rooting for miss Beaton. 🙂
