I’m not sure yet if this will be a good thing or a bad thing for webcomics.
One the one hand it will be easier to make a bit of actual money off of your webcomic, but on the other hand that means less free stuff.
I hope it does work out. It would give more options to webcomic artists and some creators wouldn’t have to be T-shirt factories in order to make a steady income.
Judgment reserved – for now. I think the micropayment thing will kick around for a bit, but cartoonists will be reluctant to use it as a main means for making money off their creations.
I wouldn’t want to cheapen the value of my work by saying – you can pay 2 cents for this JPEG if you like it or pay 25 cents and get yourself a batch of them.
Just give them away for free, build a relationship with your readers and supply them with merchandise they want and will buy. That is the typical webcomics financial model. It doesn’t have to be more complicated by introducing more pay features on the net. I don’t want your pocket change. Save it up and get something more substantial – and you’ll spend less time wasted.
