Paradigm Shift review on Comic Fencing

Happy Fourth of July! When you’re done gorging on hot dogs and hamburgers (or, for you vegetarians, tofu dogs and gardenburgers), check out my review of Paradigm Shift, a sort of police drama but where the perps turn into wolves. Do I give this the Rear Naked Chokeslam of Approval, or the Go Go Plata of Death? Check our my review on Comic Fencing!

About El Santo

Somehow ended up reading and reviewing almost 300 different webcomics. Life is funny, huh? Despite owning two masks, is not actually a luchador.

  1. I am curious how the reviewers for Webcomic Fencing were rounded up, and whether you know in advance who else will be reviewing the same book as you.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not angling for a slot. I am not a gifted reviewer. But I find myself thinking that this might be an interesting story.

I don’t think I could round up four people to review my sneakers, so I am wondering how people are lured into this challenging assignment.

  2. Delos Woodruff, the site’s moderator, was mainly responsible for rounding us up. I have no idea where Jay Slay, Anthony Cardnos, and Jack Carter (our mysterious fifth reviewer, if you can believe it) came from, but I’m fairly confident that he picked up my name from the ComixTalk articles I’ve been doing. Anyway, he sent me an e-mail, asking if I wanted to be part of the pilot group to get the whole “Comic Fencing” thing kicked off. I don’t think any of us have ever met in RL, but that’s par for the course for any online collaboration.

We communicated initially through e-mail, though, lately, it looks like we’ve been bouncing off ideas through the comments section now. I like it better that way; it seems more interactive. Plus I get to cover points that I might’ve missed. (I’m especially enjoying the current debate over the merits of a manga-style webcomic.)

Delos also acts as the editor, sifting out the requests ahead of time. We basically get the Comics-to-Review list in the mail. This week’s review, “No Need For Bushido,” was on an e-mail communication a couple of weeks ago. Sometimes he switches it up, though. “Lackadaisy” wasn’t originally on our review schedule, but heck, it had good art and was fairly short, so we had no problem with that at all.

I know you said you’re not really angling for a spot, but if it ever struck your fancy, you could probably e-mail Delos and he’d be more than happy to add another Fencer to the fold. His e-mail located somewhere on the Comic Fencing site, methinks. We’re also supposed to be doing a podcast interview with the guys at the Webcomic Beacon, but getting everyone’s schedules sorted out is mega tough.
